How to Choose Women’s Work Boots

A good women’s work boot starts with the hazards on the job and a fit you can wear through the shift. This collection brings together Xena safety boots and Proxon’s Icon Chelsea and Elise lace-up styles. Compare the construction and protection of each model rather than assuming every boot in the collection has the same features.

Start with the required safety toe

Most styles here use steel toes, including the Proxon Icon and Elise and Xena Nova, Valence, Gravity, Spice and Omega. Xena Horizon uses an alloy toe, while Luna uses a composite toe. Choose the protective toe specification required by your workplace. A different toe material does not tell you everything about boot weight, comfort or the rest of its protection.

Choose the closure and height you prefer

Proxon Icon and Xena Valence offer Chelsea styling. Proxon Elise is a lace-up boot, while Xena Spice combines adjustable laces with a side zipper. Omega provides a zip-up option, Gravity has a bootie profile, and Luna has an athletic high-top boot design. Horizon’s 8-inch height and Nova’s taller riding-style shaft offer more coverage. Start with how you move, dress and put your boots on each day.

Check electrical and underfoot protection

EH and SD are separate requirements. Xena Nova, Horizon, Luna, Spice and Omega are EH-rated; Valence is SD35. Do not assume an electrical rating for Gravity or the Proxon models without a corresponding product specification. Puncture resistance is listed for Proxon Icon and Elise and Xena Horizon and Luna. Steel toe alone does not establish puncture resistance or electrical protection.

Be specific about wet work

Xena Luna is listed as waterproof. The remaining Xena boots here are water-resistant; Proxon’s moisture-resistant leather should not be treated as a claim that the whole boot is waterproof. Also check the slip-resistance conditions: Luna lists dry, wet and oily surfaces, while the other Xena boots in this collection list dry and wet surfaces. No outsole eliminates the risk of slipping.

Use the sizing notes for that model

Xena recommends sizing up at least half a size in Horizon and Gravity. Nova, Valence, Spice and Omega generally follow their true-to-size guidance, with actual Wide options available on those models and Gravity. Luna has separate fit guidance for wider feet. A recommendation to size up is different from a selectable Wide width. Proxon’s fit-adjustment insoles are also different from ordering an actual wide-width variant.

Compare the boot with your whole shift

Think about walking distance, time on concrete, work socks, required clothing and the conditions underfoot. Check size, width, toe room and any calf measurements before ordering.
