How to Choose Electrical Hazard Work Boots

What does EH mean on work boots?

EH stands for Electrical Hazard.

EH-rated footwear is designed and tested to provide a secondary level of resistance against electrical current traveling through the wearer’s feet to ground under specified conditions.

The key word is secondary. EH footwear supplements electrical safety controls; it does not make intentional contact with energized equipment safe.

Are EH boots the same as electrical insulating boots?

No.

Everyday EH-rated work boots are not the same as specialized dielectric footwear used for particular electrical work.

EH work boots may combine everyday features such as safety toes, waterproofing, traction, cushioning, and jobsite durability with tested electrical-hazard performance.

When specialized dielectric footwear or other electrical PPE is required, use the equipment specified by the employer’s electrical safety program.

Does composite toe automatically mean EH rated?

No.

Toe construction and electrical-hazard protection describe two different features.

A composite-toe boot may or may not be EH rated. The same is true for steel-toe and soft-toe footwear.

Do not use toe material as a shortcut. Verify the EH marking and manufacturer specifications for the individual boot.

Can steel-toe boots be EH rated?

Yes.

A steel safety toe does not automatically prevent a finished boot from receiving an EH classification.

What matters is the complete footwear construction and its tested performance, not simply whether the protective toe cap contains metal.

What should you choose first: toe type or EH rating?

Start with the requirements of the job.

If EH protection is required, confirm that first. Then choose the toe construction according to the other hazards and working conditions.

Soft toe: for jobs where protective toe protection is not required.

Steel toe: a traditional safety-toe option for impact and compression hazards.

Composite toe: a non-metallic safety-toe option that can appeal to workers concerned with weight, temperature transfer, or metal-free workplace requirements.

The individual boot still needs the specific ratings required by the job.

Are EH work boots waterproof?

Not automatically.

Electrical-hazard protection and waterproofing are separate characteristics.

An EH boot may be waterproof, water resistant, or neither. If the work also involves rain, outdoor conditions, wet yards, or washdown environments, verify both features independently.

Moisture can also reduce the protective value of electrical-hazard footwear, so waterproofing should never be interpreted as permission to work around energized hazards in wet conditions.

What can reduce EH protection?

The condition of the footwear matters.

Protection can be compromised by issues such as:

  • worn or damaged soles
  • deep cuts or punctures
  • embedded nails, screws, wire, or metal debris
  • cracked materials
  • sole separation
  • excessive moisture
  • exposed internal components
  • unauthorized modifications or repairs

Inspect protective footwear regularly and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

Is EH the same as static-dissipative footwear?

No.

These footwear categories address different electrical concerns.

EH footwear is intended to reduce the risk of electric shock by resisting current flow through the wearer toward ground.

Static-dissipative footwear is designed to reduce static buildup in a controlled manner.

One should not automatically be substituted for the other. Use the category required for the actual workplace hazard.

What else matters in an EH work boot?

Once the required rating is confirmed, evaluate the boot like any other work footwear.

Consider:

  • toe protection
  • waterproofing
  • outsole traction
  • puncture resistance
  • boot height
  • weight
  • cushioning
  • width and fit
  • the surfaces you stand and walk on all day

A safety feature only helps if the rest of the boot works for the job.

A simple way to choose

EH requirement: verify the individual boot’s published EH classification first.

Safety toe required: choose steel or composite according to the job.

Mostly indoor work: prioritize fit, comfort, weight, and traction.

Outdoor or wet conditions: independently verify waterproofing.

Sharp-debris environment: consider puncture-resistant footwear when required.

Long shifts on concrete: pay close attention to cushioning, support, weight, and fit.

EH-rated work boots are one piece of an electrical safety system — not permission to work on energized equipment without the controls and PPE the job requires.
