Best Winter Work Gloves for Loading Docks & Outdoor Material Handling

A loading dock in winter can feel like three different workplaces in one shift.

You move from a warm building to an open doorway, handle cold freight, then return to labels, scanners, and paperwork. The thickest glove in the drawer may be warm, but that does not help much if you cannot control the work.

The best winter work gloves for loading docks and outdoor material handling balance the conditions with the task: warmth, grip, fit, dexterity, and the protection the materials require.

Here are the models we would evaluate from MEM Supply Co., along with the limits to check before buying.

The quick picks

Winter work gloves: match the task and conditions
Priority Pair to consider Main tradeoff
Cold-condition work with a cut-protection requirement LIFT FiberWire A5 Winter Confirm the exact rating and required protection; no temperature limit is stated here
Fleece-lined leather for general handling Bear Knuckles Midnight D409 Water resistance does not establish waterproofing or cut protection
Fleece-lined buffalo leather alternative Bear Knuckles High Noon D373 Check available sizes and whether the leather construction fits the task

These picks are based on published product construction, not a head-to-head cold-weather test. The site assessment determines the protection required.

1. Define the cold before choosing the glove

A short trip onto a covered dock is different from sustained work in wind and rain. Handling cold metal is different from sorting dry cartons indoors.

Write down the conditions that actually occur:

  • How long does the worker remain outside or beside the open door?
  • Are the gloves exposed to rain, snow, wet freight, or perspiration?
  • Does the work require fine finger control?
  • Are sharp edges, abrasions, impact hazards, or chemicals present?

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety's cold-work guidance emphasizes staying dry, appropriate clothing, and work arrangements that address cold exposure. Gloves are one part of that arrangement, alongside shelter, warming opportunities, and the rest of the clothing.

A product called “winter” does not establish how long it is suitable at a particular temperature. We are not assigning a safe temperature limit to any of the gloves in this guide.

2. For cold work with cut hazards: LIFT FiberWire Winter

The LIFT Safety FiberWire A5 Winter Cut-Resistant Gloves use a 13-gauge HDPE and glass-fiber shell with a double-dipped nitrile microfoam palm.

We would start here when a cold-condition glove must also address the cut hazards identified for the work. LIFT markets this as its FiberWire A5 Winter model and publishes cut-performance information. Check the exact product marking and documentation against the required rating before issue.

This matters around freight with sharp edges or abrasive components. A warm leather glove and a glove with documented cut performance answer different protection questions.

What to check: whether the palm grip, finger control, and warmth suit your actual conditions. We are not treating the palm coating as proof that the entire glove is waterproof, nor as sufficient evidence of protection against a specific chemical.

For the rating background, see ANSI cut ratings explained and ANSI vs. EN 388 glove ratings.

3. For fleece-lined leather: Bear Knuckles Midnight D409

Bear Knuckles Midnight D409 black leather driver gloves
The Midnight offers fleece-lined leather with water resistance.

The Bear Knuckles Midnight D409 combines cowhide leather with a fleece lining. Its listed construction includes pre-curved fingers, a winged thumb, and an elastic back.

It is a pair to evaluate for general cold-weather handling when fleece-lined leather suits the task and the required protection. Bear Knuckles describes water repellency from the tanning process, which is useful information to distinguish from a waterproof barrier.

What to check: bulk around the fingers, grip on the materials you handle, and drying needs. Do not assume a documented ANSI cut rating, touchscreen function, or waterproof membrane simply because the glove is lined and water-resistant.

4. A buffalo-leather alternative: Bear Knuckles High Noon D373

The Bear Knuckles High Noon D373 is another fleece-lined, water-resistant leather option, using buffalo leather rather than the Midnight's cowhide.

Compare the two for feel and fit instead of choosing solely by leather type. Hand shape, lining, and the task all affect whether a pair is comfortable to use.

What to check: the exact size available when ordering and the protection needed. This model is an alternative to evaluate, not a universal replacement for the cut-resistant LIFT glove.

Water-resistant is not waterproof

Light moisture exposure and sustained wet work deserve separate purchasing decisions. Water-repellent leather or a coated palm does not automatically establish a waterproof glove.

If your task routinely soaks the glove, look for documented whole-glove waterproof construction suitable for that exposure. If no product in this selection meets the need, choose another appropriately documented option rather than stretching the claim.

Keep a dry replacement arrangement available and follow the care instructions. CCOHS notes that wet conditions and clothing affect cold protection; a spare pair should support the cold-work plan, not replace it.

Fit the glove around the work

Evaluate fit with a safe version of the normal task. Pick up the cartons, operate the tools, and read or use the equipment controls you need.

  • Check fingertip position and whether material bunches in the palm.
  • Make sure you can close your hand without excessive effort.
  • Check the cuff with the sleeve of your work jacket.
  • Confirm grip and control through the movements the job requires.

If a scanner or touchscreen is essential, verify it with the exact glove and device. None of the three models above is being recommended here on a documented touchscreen feature. A general touchscreen glove may be useful indoors, but that feature alone does not establish cold protection.

Our touchscreen work glove guide covers that separate decision.

Use more than one glove when the tasks need it

It can be practical to have an approved cold-condition pair for dock work and a different approved pair for indoor detail work. The important part is making the change without leaving hands unprotected during a hazardous task.

OSHA's hand-protection rule ties glove selection to the task, conditions, duration, and hazards. That is a better purchasing starting point than “warmest available.”

Common questions

Are thicker gloves always warmer or better?

Thickness alone does not establish thermal performance or suitability. Evaluate documented construction, fit, and the actual exposure, including whether you can perform the work.

Can a winter cut glove be used for chemical handling?

A cut rating does not establish chemical compatibility. Use the manufacturer's chemical-specific performance data and the relevant workplace requirements.

Which pair should I try first?

Evaluate the LIFT FiberWire Winter when cut protection is needed. Consider the Midnight or High Noon when fleece-lined leather suits general handling and the task's protection requirements. Test fit before ordering for the crew.
