How to Choose Gloves for Metal Fabrication

What matters most in metal fabrication gloves?

Metal fabrication can expose hands to sharp edges, rough surfaces, burrs, tools, heavy parts, abrasion, and impact hazards. The right glove depends on the material being handled and the specific task being performed.

Start with the hazard, then balance the required protection with the grip and dexterity needed to safely control tools, parts, and materials.

When should you choose cut-resistant gloves?

Cut resistance becomes especially important when handling sheet metal, sharp edges, stamped parts, metal strapping, unfinished components, or other materials that can slice the hand.

ANSI cut ratings provide a useful way to compare protection levels. Higher ratings are intended for greater cut hazards, but the highest rating is not automatically the best choice for every fabrication job.

Choose enough protection for the actual hazard while preserving the flexibility and control the work requires.

Is a higher ANSI cut rating always better?

No.

Higher cut protection can sometimes add weight, thickness, or stiffness depending on the glove construction.

A worker handling thin sheet metal may need substantial cut protection, while someone doing lighter assembly or inspection work may benefit more from a lower-bulk glove that preserves fingertip control.

Match the glove to the hazard rather than simply choosing the highest number available.

When does impact protection make sense?

Impact-resistant gloves can be useful when workers handle heavier parts, structural materials, machinery, tools, or components where the back of the hand may be struck or bumped.

Cut resistance and impact resistance protect against different hazards. Some fabrication jobs may require both.

If both hazards are present, look for a glove specifically designed and rated for combined cut and impact protection.

Leather or coated gloves for fabrication?

Both can have a place.

Leather gloves can provide strong abrasion resistance and durability for heavier material handling, rough surfaces, and equipment work.

Coated knit gloves can provide less bulk, better breathability, and greater dexterity for handling parts, tools, hardware, and repetitive fabrication work.

The better choice depends on the task, not simply the glove material.

What should you look for in grip and dexterity?

Fabrication work often requires secure control of parts, tools, clamps, fasteners, and equipment.

Look at palm material, coating, finger flexibility, overall glove thickness, and fit. A glove that is too bulky can make smaller parts difficult to handle, while insufficient protection can expose the worker to unnecessary hazards.

The goal is enough protection without losing safe control of the work.

Are fabrication gloves suitable for welding?

Not automatically.

Many general fabrication gloves are not designed for welding heat, sparks, or molten metal exposure.

Welding requires gloves specifically designed for the welding process and associated heat and spark hazards. Do not assume a glove is suitable for welding simply because it is made from leather or marketed for fabrication work.

What about grinding and hot metal?

Grinding, cutting, and freshly worked metal can introduce heat, sparks, sharp edges, and other hazards that may require more specialized PPE than a standard fabrication glove provides.

Use gloves and other protective equipment specifically selected for the process and follow workplace procedures and equipment manufacturer guidance.

What matters for all-day wear?

Fabricators may perform several different tasks during a shift, so comfort still matters.

Consider breathability, liner weight, cuff style, coating coverage, flexibility, and overall fit.

The right fabrication glove should match the hazard while allowing the worker to grip, position, inspect, and handle materials safely throughout the job.
