What makes a good loading and freight glove?
Loading docks and freight work are harder on gloves than ordinary picking and packing. Workers may handle heavy cartons, wood pallets, crates, damaged freight, shrink wrap, strapping, rough surfaces, and awkward loads throughout the shift.

Lightweight gloves or heavy-duty gloves?
Not every loading job requires a heavy glove.
For lighter parcel freight and clean cartons, a close-fitting coated glove can still provide useful grip and dexterity.
As the work moves toward pallets, rough freight, crates, heavy cartons, damaged materials, and repeated loading or unloading, more durable leather, reinforced, cut-resistant, or impact-protected gloves begin to make more sense.
The glove should scale with the work.
When do leather gloves make sense?
Leather driver gloves are a strong option for pallets, rough materials, loading docks, hauling, equipment operation, and repeated abrasion.
They generally provide more durability than lightweight knit gloves when workers regularly contact rough wood, crates, heavy freight, or dirty material.
The tradeoff is usually more bulk and less fingertip sensitivity, so lighter gloves may still be better for parcel-heavy work.
When is cut resistance important?
Freight work can expose workers to metal banding, broken pallets, exposed staples, damaged cartons, sharp packaging, sheet materials, or unknown contents.
When identified cut hazards are present, look for a glove with a published ANSI cut rating appropriate for the exposure.
Do not assume a thick leather or impact glove automatically provides tested cut protection.
When does impact protection make sense?
Impact-resistant gloves can be useful when workers handle heavy materials, industrial freight, machinery, equipment, or awkward loads where the fingers and back of the hand may be bumped or struck.
Cut resistance and impact resistance address different hazards. Some freight jobs may require one, both, or neither.
Choose the protection around the actual work instead of automatically selecting the most heavily armored glove available.
What about wet, oily, or dirty freight?
Grip changes when packaging and materials become wet, oily, dusty, or slick.
Palm material matters. Certain coated gloves can provide aggressive traction on slick surfaces, while treated leather can make sense for rough outdoor or loading-yard work.
If water or oil exposure is common, check the individual product construction and manufacturer specifications rather than assuming every glove performs the same way.
What matters around pallets?

How should freight gloves fit?
A freight glove should feel secure enough that it moves with the hand during a lift.
Loose fingertips and excess material can reduce control on cartons, straps, handles, and awkward loads. Gloves that are too tight can restrict movement and become uncomfortable during repeated gripping.
Look for a secure palm and finger fit with enough flexibility to close the hand naturally.
What matters over a full shift?
Loading and unloading is repetitive physical work. Excessive glove weight or stiffness can become tiring over time.

More protection is useful only when the job actually needs it.

The right freight glove should match what comes through the dock—not simply be the heaviest glove you can find.
