How to Choose Hi-Vis Workwear

Start with the visibility requirement

The first question is not which garment looks brightest. Start with the actual work environment and any visibility requirements established by the employer, jobsite, contract, or applicable safety standard.

If a specific high-visibility performance class is required, verify the classification on the individual product before choosing by style, color, or price.

Class 2 or Class 3?

Class 2 and Class 3 garments provide different levels of high-visibility coverage.

Class 2 can be appropriate for many jobs where increased worker visibility is required, while Class 3 provides greater visible coverage for more demanding visibility conditions.

The correct choice should come from the work environment and hazard assessment rather than simply choosing the highest class available.

Choose the garment around the job

Once the visibility requirement is established, consider how the garment will actually be worn.

Safety vests provide a lightweight visibility layer and are easy to wear over normal work clothing.

Hi-vis shirts can work well in warmer conditions or when workers need visibility without an additional outer layer.

Hi-vis hoodies add warmth while maintaining useful visibility for cooler warehouses, yards, and outdoor work.

Hi-vis jackets make more sense when weather protection, insulation, or heavier outerwear is needed.

Consider weather and layering

A vest that works perfectly in summer may not fit correctly over a winter jacket.

Think about seasonal clothing, rain exposure, cold conditions, and how many layers will be worn underneath the hi-vis garment.

Fit should allow normal movement without creating excessive loose material or restricting the work being performed.

Is every bright or reflective garment ANSI compliant?

No.

Bright colors and reflective material do not automatically establish a specific safety classification.

When ANSI/ISEA compliance is required, rely on the manufacturer’s published specifications and garment labeling rather than appearance alone.

What matters for warehouse and equipment work?

Visibility can also be useful inside warehouses, distribution centers, loading yards, docks, and facilities where workers share space with forklifts or other powered equipment.

Hi-vis apparel does not replace pedestrian controls, equipment procedures, traffic separation, or safe operating practices, but appropriate visibility can be one part of the overall safety system.

Comfort still matters

A garment that is uncomfortable, overly restrictive, or poorly suited to the environment is more likely to be worn incorrectly or removed.

Consider breathability, weight, fit, closure style, pocket layout, range of motion, and the conditions workers will face during the shift.

The right hi-vis garment should meet the work requirement while remaining practical enough to wear throughout the job.
