How to Choose Work Eyewear

Start with the job

The right work eyewear depends on where you work, what hazards are present, and how your eyes need to stay protected throughout the shift.

Start with any required safety rating, then consider lighting conditions, fit, coverage, glare, lens type, and comfort.

Safety glasses or work sunglasses?

Safety glasses are built around workplace eye protection and should be selected according to the rating required for the job.

Work sunglasses are useful for bright outdoor conditions and glare, but ordinary sunglasses should not automatically be treated as safety eyewear.

If workplace eye protection is required, verify the published safety rating for the individual product rather than choosing by appearance alone.

What does ANSI Z87+ mean?

Many safety glasses use ANSI/ISEA Z87 markings to identify tested protective performance.

When a specific rating is required by your employer or worksite, confirm the individual product specifications and markings before buying.

Do not assume that every wraparound frame, polycarbonate lens, or rugged-looking pair of glasses meets the same safety standard.

Clear, tinted, or photochromic lenses?

Choose the lens around where the glasses will actually be worn.

Clear lenses are a natural starting point for warehouses, shops, maintenance work, and lower-light indoor environments.

Tinted or sunglass lenses make more sense for bright outdoor work.

Photochromic lenses automatically change tint according to available UV exposure and can be useful for workers who repeatedly move between indoor and outdoor environments.

For example, MEM carries photochromic Z87+ options designed specifically around changing light conditions.

When does polarization help?

Polarized lenses can reduce reflected glare from surfaces such as roads, water, glass, vehicles, and bright outdoor environments.

That can make them useful for driving, yard work, outdoor equipment operation, delivery routes, and other jobs with significant glare.

Polarization and safety rating are separate considerations, so confirm both when occupational eye protection is required.

Why does fit matter?

Safety eyewear needs to stay comfortably and securely positioned through the workday.

Look for a frame that does not create excessive temple pressure, slide constantly, sit incorrectly on the nose, or leave unwanted gaps around the eyes.

Workers with wider heads may benefit from a larger frame designed specifically around additional width instead of forcing a standard-size frame to flex outward. MEM's Breach XL, for example, is a genuine large-to-XL frame measuring 152 mm wide.

When should you consider side shields?

Side shields add lateral coverage for work where hazards can approach the eye from more than directly in front.

Some frames use permanent or built-in side protection, while others use removable shields. The better option depends on the work, required coverage, and whether the eyewear needs to transition between different environments.

MEM carries both built-in and removable side-shield designs.

What about anti-fog eyewear?

Heat, humidity, respirators, masks, temperature changes, and physical work can cause lenses to fog.

If fogging is a recurring problem, look for eyewear specifically designed with anti-fog features rather than constantly removing the glasses to clear them.

Good visibility is part of effective protection.

Comfort matters over a full shift

A pair of glasses can have excellent specifications and still be wrong for you if it hurts enough that you keep taking it off.

Consider frame width, temple design, nose contact, lens coverage, overall weight, and how the eyewear feels after several hours rather than several minutes.

The goal is the correct protection, lens, and fit for the work — in a pair you can comfortably keep on.
