Work Glove Coatings Explained: Nitrile vs. Latex vs. Polyurethane

Nitrile, latex, polyurethane, foam nitrile, sandy nitrile—work glove coatings can start sounding like a chemistry class pretty quickly. This guide breaks down how the most common palm coatings actually behave on the job, where each one works best, and how to choose the right grip without giving up the dexterity or protection your work requires.

Work Glove Coatings Explained: Nitrile vs. Latex vs. Polyurethane

Pick up three pairs of lightweight work gloves and they can look almost identical.

Knit liner.

Elastic cuff.

Rubbery-looking palm.

Maybe one is gray, one is black, and somebody got adventurous with high-vis green.

Then you look at the specifications.

Micro-foam nitrile.

Crinkle latex.

Polyurethane palm.

And suddenly buying work gloves feels like somebody slipped a materials-science exam into the PPE aisle.

But the coating actually matters.

A lot.

The coating is the part of many work gloves that makes direct contact with the box, tool, piece of steel, pallet, wet part, or whatever else you're trying not to drop.

A useful way to think about it is this:

The liner protects and supports your hand. The coating is the glove's contact patch.

Change that contact surface and you can change the grip, feel, abrasion resistance, flexibility, oil performance and overall personality of the glove.

That's why two gloves with similar-looking knit liners can perform completely differently once the shift starts.

Quick Answer: Which Work Glove Coating Is Best?

There isn't one coating that wins every category.

Here's the short version:

PIP's coating guidance describes nitrile as strong in dry grip and abrasion performance, latex as strong in dry and aqueous wet grip, and PU as especially useful when thin coating and dexterity matter.

The real answer, though, is:

Choose the coating around what your hands actually touch all day.


What Is a Coated Work Glove?

Most lightweight coated work gloves start with some type of knitted liner.

That liner might be:

  • nylon
  • polyester
  • HPPE
  • engineered cut-resistant fiber
  • blends containing glass or other reinforcing fibers

Then the manufacturer applies a polymer coating to part of the glove.

Common configurations include:

Palm dipped
The palm and fingers are coated while most of the back remains exposed.

Three-quarter coated
More of the fingers and back of the hand receive coating.

Fully coated
Most or all of the glove receives the polymer layer.

Coverage matters almost as much as the chemistry.

A thin palm-dipped glove can remain relatively cool and flexible because much of the knit remains exposed.

A fully coated glove may provide more barrier coverage but generally feels like a very different piece of equipment.

This is why asking only:

"Is it nitrile?"

doesn't tell you enough.

You also need to know:

What kind of nitrile? What finish? How much coating? What liner is underneath it?

This article is about what happens after you've decided you want a coated glove.


Nitrile-Coated Work Gloves

If there is a workhorse of modern industrial glove coatings, nitrile deserves the title.

Nitrile is a synthetic rubber used across a huge range of gloves because manufacturers can tune it for very different jobs.

You can find nitrile coatings on:

  • lightweight warehouse gloves
  • touchscreen gloves
  • cut-resistant gloves
  • fabrication gloves
  • automotive gloves
  • oil-handling gloves
  • heavy industrial protection

Industry guidance generally highlights nitrile for durability, abrasion resistance and performance around oils and grease.

But saying "nitrile glove" is a little like saying "truck."

Okay.

What kind?

Because nitrile comes in several very different finishes.


Micro-Foam Nitrile

This is one of my favorite coatings for everyday warehouse and material-handling work.

Micro-foam nitrile is designed to provide grip while keeping the coating relatively thin and flexible.

Depending on the exact construction, the textured cellular surface can help manage small amounts of fluid at the contact surface while preserving tactile control.

That combination makes it particularly useful when workers are handling:

  • cardboard cartons
  • plastic totes
  • parts
  • tools
  • shipping materials
  • scanners
  • light equipment
  • slightly oily components

Manufacturers including PIP and SHOWA describe foam nitrile designs as useful for grip in dry and oily conditions while retaining flexibility and, in suitable palm-dipped constructions, breathability.

MEM Example: NiTex P-200

The Advanced Gloves NiTex P-200 General Work Glove is probably the cleanest example in the current MEM lineup.

  • a 15-gauge nylon liner
  • water-based micro-foam nitrile coating
  • close-fitting construction
  • grip-oriented palm
  • lightweight, dexterity-focused design

That makes it an easy fit for:

warehouse work, picking, packing, delivery, maintenance and general material handling.

This is the glove I'd look at when your job is mostly:

Box → tote → cart → scanner → repeat.

You don't need your hands dressed like they're entering battle.

You need enough grip to make the work easier while still being able to use your fingers.


Foam Nitrile vs. Micro-Foam Nitrile

You'll see both terms in glove catalogs.

There isn't one universal industry rule that makes every product labeled "micro-foam" behave exactly the same.

Generally, both describe nitrile coatings containing a textured or cellular structure rather than a completely smooth solid surface.

The important things to compare are still:

  • coating thickness
  • texture
  • coating coverage
  • liner gauge
  • grip claims
  • abrasion performance
  • manufacturer specifications

In other words:

Don't buy a glove because the coating name sounds fancy.

Buy it because the complete glove matches the work.


Sandy Nitrile

Now turn the aggression dial up.

Sandy nitrile uses a deliberately roughened surface texture.

The goal is increased friction and grip rather than the smoother tactile feel of a lightweight micro-foam coating.

That's why sandy nitrile tends to show up on gloves built for more demanding material handling.

It combines:

  • ANSI A6 cut resistance
  • sandy nitrile palm
  • high-grip handling
  • breathable stretch construction
  • strong mechanical protection ratings

 

That makes it much more interesting when the job starts involving:

  • damaged cartons
  • sharp packaging
  • strapping
  • sheet materials
  • rough freight
  • industrial parts
  • slippery or awkward materials

If the NiTex P-200 is the nimble warehouse glove, the Switchblade is more like:

Okay, now the boxes are fighting back.

And that's exactly why both belong in the catalog.

Different contact surfaces.

Different hazards.

Different glove.


When Nitrile Makes the Most Sense

Nitrile is usually one of the first coatings I'd consider when the work involves some combination of:

Grip

Abrasion

Cardboard

Parts

Light oil exposure

Material handling

Dexterity

Industrial wear

That's also why nitrile shows up so heavily in our Warehouse Work Gloves collection.

But nitrile is not automatically the right answer for every job.

If your biggest priority is pure tactile sensitivity, PU may be better.

If you want aggressive wet/dry traction and elasticity at a low crew cost, crinkle latex becomes very interesting.


Latex-Coated Work Gloves

Latex coatings feel different from nitrile.

Natural rubber latex is highly elastic and flexible, and textured latex coatings can generate excellent grip.

Crinkle finishes take that idea further by creating an intentionally rough surface.

PIP lists latex as providing good dry and wet grip along with useful resistance to abrasion and other mechanical wear. SHOWA also describes natural rubber latex as flexible, robust and strong in grip, while noting poorer resistance to oils, grease and hydrocarbons than nitrile.

That distinction matters.

Latex is an excellent grip material.

It just isn't automatically the best polymer for every fluid environment.


What Is Crinkle Latex?

Look closely at a crinkle-latex palm and the name makes sense.

Instead of being smooth, the coating has a rough, wrinkled texture.

That texture creates additional contact with the material being handled.

This makes crinkle latex useful for:

  • cartons
  • lumber
  • masonry
  • construction materials
  • landscaping
  • wet material handling
  • general warehouse work
  • crew PPE

Crew economics.

If you're outfitting twelve people who need straightforward grip gloves, the purchasing decision is different than buying one premium pair for a scanner-heavy picker.

Packing stations.

Receiving departments.

Landscaping crews.

Maintenance carts.

Temporary labor.

General material handling.

Sometimes the correct glove doesn't need seventeen features.

It needs to:

Grip things, fit reasonably well, survive the work and be easy to replace.

That's exactly where a 12-pack makes sense.

What About Latex Allergies?

This is worth knowing.

Natural rubber latex contains proteins that can trigger allergic reactions in some people. NIOSH and OSHA both recognize occupational latex allergy as a legitimate workplace concern.

That doesn't mean:

Latex glove = bad glove.

It means workers with known latex sensitivity should use an appropriate non-latex alternative.

Nitrile and polyurethane give buyers plenty of options when natural rubber latex isn't appropriate.


Is Latex Better Than Nitrile for Wet Grip?

Sometimes.

But "wet" is too vague to answer that question by itself.

Water?

Grease?

Cutting fluid?

Motor oil?

Detergent?

Outdoor materials?

Those aren't the same environment.

Textured latex can provide excellent traction around water and aqueous conditions.

Nitrile is generally the more natural starting point where oils, grease and hydrocarbons become a bigger part of the job.

And then the specific texture still matters.

A smooth nitrile coating does not behave exactly like foam nitrile.

Foam nitrile doesn't behave exactly like sandy nitrile.

The chemistry matters.

The surface finish matters too.


Polyurethane-Coated Work Gloves

Polyurethane — usually shortened to PU — lives toward the precision end of the coating spectrum.

PU can be applied extremely thinly.

That matters because every extra layer between your fingertips and the object you're handling reduces some amount of tactile feedback.

A thin PU coating can provide:

  • good dry grip
  • abrasion resistance
  • flexibility
  • very good tactile sensitivity
  • strong dexterity
  • precise small-part handling

PIP specifically describes PU as a coating that can be applied very thinly, creating excellent tactility and dexterity.

That makes PU particularly attractive for:

assembly

inspection

small parts

electronics-related handling where appropriate

precision maintenance

light fabrication

components and hardware

The worker trying to grab an M5 washer off a bench has a very different glove problem from the guy unloading a pallet of rough castings.

PU exists for that reason.

This is also a good example of an important concept:

The coating and the protection rating are two different things.

PU provides the working surface.

The cut-resistant liner and overall tested glove construction provide the cut protection.

Don't confuse them.


Does PU Work Around Oil?

Some polyurethane coatings can maintain useful performance in slightly wet or lightly oily environments, and specific manufacturers offer oil-oriented PU formulations.

But as a broad shopping rule, nitrile is usually the safer starting point when oils and grease dominate the task, while PU's main attraction is thinness and tactile control.

Again:

Read the actual product specification.

A polymer name is not a substitute for manufacturer test data.


Nitrile vs. Latex vs. PU: Which Has the Best Grip?

This depends heavily on what you're gripping.

Dry cardboard

For repetitive warehouse carton handling, micro-foam nitrile is one of our favorite starting points because it combines traction with low bulk.

That's one reason the P-200 shows up repeatedly in our warehouse recommendations.

Rough freight or sharper materials

A sandy nitrile surface like the Switchblade starts making more sense.

You gain a more aggressive working surface plus additional protection from the glove around it.

General wet/dry material handling

Crinkle latex can be extremely effective.

Small parts and precision handling

PU is difficult to beat when fingertip feel is the priority.

There is no champion.

There are jobs.


Which Coating Is Best for Warehouse Work?

If someone told me:

"I work in a warehouse. Pick a coating."

I'd start with nitrile, particularly micro-foam nitrile.

But that's only the beginning of the conversation.

Picking and packing

Micro-foam nitrile.

Constant scanners and devices

Micro-foam nitrile plus confirmed touchscreen capability.

Rough receiving and freight

Sandy nitrile or a heavier-duty coating.

Crew-issued basic grip glove

Crinkle latex is worth serious consideration.

Sharp components

Choose the required cut protection first, then choose the grip coating.

Precision assembly

PU becomes more attractive.

Which Coating Is Best for Cardboard Boxes?

For ordinary cartons:

Micro-foam nitrile is our starting recommendation.

Why?

Because cardboard handling rewards:

  • grip
  • dexterity
  • low bulk
  • breathability
  • repetitive comfort

If box cutters, damaged cartons, staples or banding enter the job, move into actual cut protection.

That's where a glove like the Bear Knuckles Switchblade A6 can make more sense.

Which Coating Is Best for Oily Parts?

Start by distinguishing:

oily handling

from

chemical exposure.

Those are not the same problem.

For parts with light oil or grease present, nitrile coatings are commonly favored because nitrile itself has strong resistance to oils and hydrocarbons compared with natural rubber latex.

Foam and textured nitrile surfaces can also help create grip where a smooth wet surface would otherwise be difficult to control.

But if the work involves meaningful exposure to solvents, chemicals or hazardous liquids:

Stop choosing by coating name alone.

OSHA requires hand protection to be selected based on the task, conditions, duration and identified hazards, and its guidance specifically warns that no glove protects against every chemical hazard. Manufacturer chemical-resistance information should be consulted for the actual substance involved.

A palm-dipped nitrile warehouse glove is not automatically a chemical glove.

That's an important distinction.


Does a Nitrile Coating Make a Glove Cut Resistant?

No.

Let's kill this one completely.

Nitrile is a grip/coating material.

Cut resistance comes from the complete glove construction and standardized testing.

Compare these two MEM products:

The NiTex P-200 General Work Glove uses micro-foam nitrile but is explicitly a general-purpose glove.

The LIFT FiberWire A5 Nitrile Microfoam Glove also uses nitrile microfoam — but underneath it is an engineered cut-resistant shell with A5 protection.

Does a Thicker Coating Mean a Better Glove?

Not necessarily.

Thicker can mean more material between your hand and the work surface.

That may help durability or barrier performance in a product designed for it.

It may also reduce:

  • fingertip feel
  • flexibility
  • breathability
  • fine control

And sometimes that's fine.

A freight handler doesn't need surgeon-level fingertip sensitivity.

But a technician installing tiny hardware probably doesn't want a rubber hockey glove either.

The right amount of coating is part of matching the glove to the task.

More isn't automatically better.


Palm-Coated vs. Fully Coated Gloves

This decision is easy to overlook.

Palm-Coated

Typically better when your priorities are:

  • dexterity
  • airflow
  • general handling
  • repetitive wear
  • keeping bulk down

Fully Coated

May make more sense when additional coverage is required for the intended environment.

But additional coating also changes how the glove feels.

A warehouse picker and a worker handling oily components may need completely different levels of coverage even if both gloves use nitrile.

Again:

Read the whole glove specification.

Not one buzzword.


Other Work Glove Coatings Worth Knowing

Nitrile, latex and PU are the big three for this conversation, but they're not the entire world.

PVC

PVC coatings are commonly used where durability and barrier performance around oils, grease and petrochemicals matter.

The tradeoff is usually less tactile sensitivity compared with thinner rubber or PU coatings.

Neoprene

Neoprene appears in more specialized industrial glove applications and can perform well around certain oils, acids, caustics, grease and solvents when the glove is specifically designed and tested for those hazards.

Silicone Grip Surfaces

Silicone can also be used as a traction surface on certain work gloves.

How to Choose a Work Glove Coating

Forget the polymer name for a minute.

Ask these questions instead.

1. What am I actually touching?

Cardboard?

Steel?

Plastic totes?

Wood?

Small hardware?

Oily parts?

Wet outdoor material?

Start there.

2. Do I need maximum grip or maximum precision?

Aggressive grip tends to push you toward textured coatings.

Precision tends to push you toward thinner coatings.

3. Is oil present?

If yes, nitrile deserves serious consideration.

4. Are sharp edges present?

Then the coating is only half the conversation.

Choose the appropriate cut-resistant construction.

5. Am I wearing these for eight hours?

Comfort matters.

A theoretically excellent glove sitting on the workbench because nobody can stand wearing it isn't protecting anybody.

6. Do I use a scanner or touchscreen constantly?

Then touchscreen capability needs to be explicitly part of the glove specification.

FAQ: Work Glove Coatings

Is nitrile better than latex for work gloves?

Not universally.

Nitrile is generally stronger around oils and hydrocarbons and is widely used for durable industrial grip.

Latex offers excellent elasticity and strong grip, particularly in dry and aqueous wet conditions.

The better choice depends on the material being handled.

Are polyurethane gloves good for warehouse work?

They can be, particularly where precision, small parts and dexterity are priorities.

For repetitive carton handling, MEM generally favors micro-foam nitrile as a starting point because grip is such a dominant requirement.

What is the best coating for handling cardboard?

For most pick-and-pack work, we like micro-foam nitrile.

What is sandy nitrile?

Sandy nitrile is a nitrile coating with a rough textured finish designed to increase grip.

What is crinkle latex?

Does nitrile mean cut resistant?

No.

A nitrile coating alone does not establish a cut rating.

Look for tested ANSI or EN cut performance on the complete glove.

Does nitrile mean chemical resistant?

No.

Certain nitrile glove constructions are designed and tested for chemical resistance.

A lightweight nitrile-coated knit glove should not be assumed to provide that protection unless the manufacturer specifies it for the chemical and application involved. OSHA recommends selecting hand protection against the actual identified hazard.


The Bottom Line

The palm coating might look like a small detail.

It isn't.

It's the surface between your hand and the work.

And when you're picking, packing, building, repairing, unloading, assembling or handling material for eight hours, that surface can determine whether the glove feels like a useful tool or something you're dying to pull off by lunch.

For most warehouse and everyday material handling:

Micro-foam nitrile is an excellent place to start.

Need more aggressive grip and cut protection?

Look at sandy nitrile.

Need a flexible, straightforward grip surface for general material handling or crew use?

Crinkle latex deserves a look.

Need precision and fingertip control?

PU is hard to ignore.

There isn't a universally best coating.

There is a coating that makes sense for your work.
