Coated vs. Uncoated Work Gloves for Warehouse Work: Which Is Better?
Walk through almost any warehouse and you’ll see a little bit of everything on people’s hands.
Foam nitrile palms.
Sandy nitrile coatings.
Leather drivers.
Cut-resistant knit gloves.
And, occasionally, the guy raw-dogging cardboard for eight hours because apparently hand lotion is part of his retirement plan.
But one of the more common questions when choosing warehouse gloves is surprisingly simple:
Are coated or uncoated work gloves better?
The answer is:
It depends on what you’re actually handling.
For most warehouse jobs involving cartons, pallets, scanners, stretch wrap, parts, and repetitive material handling, a lightweight palm-coated glove offers some major advantages.
But coating is not automatically better for every task, and thicker or more aggressive coatings can become unnecessary if the job is mostly about dexterity, airflow, or light handling.
Here’s how to choose.
What Is a Coated Work Glove?
A coated work glove usually starts with a knitted fabric liner.
Then part of the glove — most commonly the palm and fingers — is dipped or coated in a material designed to improve grip, durability, or protection.
Common coatings include:
- nitrile
- foam nitrile
- sandy nitrile
- latex
- polyurethane
- PVC
In warehouse applications, nitrile coatings are extremely common because they can improve grip and abrasion resistance while still allowing manufacturers to build thin, flexible gloves.

That explains why you see this style everywhere from fulfillment centers to maintenance shops.

What Is an Uncoated Work Glove?
An uncoated glove simply does not have that dipped palm layer.
That could mean:
- a plain knit glove
- a fabric glove
- certain canvas gloves
- leather work gloves
- other glove constructions where the outer material itself provides the working surface
Uncoated does not automatically mean cheaper, weaker, or worse.
A heavy buffalo leather driver glove, for example, is technically a completely different animal from a thin nitrile-coated warehouse glove.
It may offer dramatically more material and durability for rough freight or pallet work while sacrificing some of the fingertip sensitivity you’d want for scanners and small packages.
OSHA’s general guidance recognizes multiple categories of hand protection, including leather/canvas, fabric/coated-fabric, chemical-resistant, and other glove types. Employers are expected to select gloves based on the hazards actually present.
That last part matters.
There is no universal “best warehouse glove.”

The biggest mistake is looking at the word coated and assuming it tells you everything about the glove.
It doesn’t.
The coating type, liner, cut rating, thickness, fit, and intended application all matter.
Why Coated Gloves Work So Well in Warehouses
Warehouse work is basically a giant grip experiment disguised as employment.
Think about what workers touch during one shift:
- corrugated cardboard
- plastic totes
- stretch wrap
- labels
- tape
- pallets
- metal shelving
- pallet-jack handles
- scanners
- tools
- shrink-wrapped freight
Bare knit fabric can be perfectly comfortable, but adding the right palm coating can create more friction between the glove and the item being handled.
That matters when you’re lifting the 700th box of the day and your forearms have officially filed a complaint.
Foam nitrile is particularly useful because manufacturers can keep the coating relatively thin while maintaining grip and dexterity. PIP specifically notes that foam nitrile coatings can remain breathable while improving grip on dry and slightly oily surfaces.
Best Coated Glove for Everyday Warehouse Work

Not quite.
There are jobs where a completely different glove construction makes more sense.
Rough Wooden Pallets
A worker moving rough pallets all day may value thicker leather and durability over scanner-level fingertip sensitivity.
Heavy Freight
If the job involves dragging, lifting, and repositioning heavy rough materials, a heavier glove may make sense.
Lumber and Rough Materials
Leather remains useful when workers need a substantial physical layer between their hands and abrasive materials.
This is where something like the Bear Knuckles Bushwacker HD361 comes into the conversation.
The Bushwacker uses 1.4 mm buffalo leather and is built as a heavy-duty driver glove. The supplier specifies approximately 40% more leather than the standard D351 Old Faithful, along with gussets and minimized seams for durability.

Are Coated Gloves Less Breathable?
They can be.
But coating coverage and coating construction matter a lot.
A fully coated glove generally covers more surface area than a palm-coated glove.
A palm-coated knit glove leaves much of the back of the hand uncovered, which can preserve airflow.
Some foam nitrile technologies are specifically engineered around breathability; PIP describes foam nitrile as breathable while still providing grip and durability.
So don't assume:
coating = sweaty glove
A thin palm-coated glove can be dramatically different from a fully dipped liquid-resistant glove.
Do Coated Gloves Last Longer?
Sometimes.
The coating can protect the palm and fingers from direct abrasion, which can help in repetitive handling.
But durability depends on:
- coating type
- coating thickness
- liner material
- abrasion level
- working surface
- how the glove is used
Dragging a lightweight warehouse glove across rough lumber all day will destroy it faster than handling clean cartons.
That does not mean the glove is bad.
It means somebody gave it the wrong job.
A sports car is also terrible at hauling gravel.

This is worth stating clearly.
Do not choose PPE solely because an article says one style has better grip.
OSHA requires employers to select hand protection based on the tasks being performed, conditions present, duration of use, and identified hazards.
A warehouse handling packaged clothing is different from a warehouse handling sheet metal.
A picker is different from a maintenance technician.
A package handler is different from someone breaking damaged pallets apart.
Same building.
Different hands.
Different hazards.
So Which Is Better for Warehouse Work?
For most repetitive warehouse material handling, I would start by looking at a lightweight palm-coated glove.
Why?
Because warehouse workers frequently need some combination of:
- grip
- dexterity
- breathable construction
- abrasion resistance
- scanner control
- low bulk
A well-designed foam nitrile palm glove fits that combination extremely well.

But if the job shifts toward:
- rough pallets
- lumber
- heavy freight
- substantial abrasion
then a heavier leather glove may be the better tool.
And if sharp-edge hazards enter the equation, choose an appropriately rated cut-resistant glove instead of assuming the palm coating itself provides sufficient protection.
The Bottom Line
The coated-vs-uncoated debate is not really about which glove is “better.”
It is about what your hands actually do all day.
For cartons, scanners, picking, packing, and general material handling:
coated gloves are usually hard to beat.
For rough pallets and heavy abrasive work:
heavier leather or another durable glove construction may make more sense.
For sharp hazards:
cut rating becomes more important than whether the palm happens to be coated.
The right glove should give you enough grip and protection to do the job without turning your hands into two useless padded oven mitts.
Because if your gloves protect you beautifully but you have to take them off every thirty seconds to actually work...
you probably bought the wrong gloves.
