ANSI Z87 vs. Regular Sunglasses: What’s the Difference?

Regular sunglasses can reduce glare and block UV, but that does not automatically make them safety glasses. Learn what ANSI Z87 and Z87+ markings mean, how protective eyewear is selected, and when ordinary sunglasses are not enough.

 

ANSI Z87 vs. Regular Sunglasses: What’s the Difference?

A dark lens and a rugged-looking frame can make a pair of sunglasses look jobsite-ready.

That does not mean they are safety glasses.

Regular sunglasses are primarily designed to reduce brightness, improve visual comfort, and provide UV protection. ANSI Z87-rated eyewear is designed and tested as occupational eye protection against specific hazards.

Some safety glasses look like ordinary sunglasses. Some sunglasses use thick lenses and wraparound frames. The difference is not appearance.

The difference is whether the finished eyewear has been designed, tested, and marked for workplace protection.

The quick answer

Regular sunglasses are not automatically safety glasses, even when they are polarized, UV-blocking, wraparound, or made with impact-resistant lens material.

Protective eyewear marked Z87 meets applicable occupational eye-protection requirements. Eyewear marked Z87+indicates high-impact protection under the applicable ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 requirements. NIOSH notes that industrial eyewear is generally marked Z87 for basic protection and Z87+ for high-impact protection.

The correct eyewear still depends on the hazard. Safety spectacles may be suitable for flying particles, while goggles, face shields, welding protection, chemical-splash protection, or other specialized equipment may be required for different exposures. OSHA requires employers to select eye and face protection appropriate to the actual hazard.

What is ANSI Z87?

“ANSI Z87” commonly refers to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, the American National Standard for occupational and educational eye and face protection devices.

The standard covers performance, testing, marking, and classification requirements for products such as:

  • Safety spectacles
  • Goggles
  • Face shields
  • Welding protectors
  • Prescription safety eyewear
  • Other occupational eye and face protectors

The current published edition is ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025. ISEA states that the 2025 revision includes updated language for impact testing, lens performance, minimum coverage, and more standardized product markings.

That does not mean every product marked under a previous edition suddenly became unusable. OSHA’s current general-industry and construction rules still expressly incorporate older editions, including Z87.1-2010, Z87.1-2003, and Z87.1-1989, or allow protection demonstrated to be at least as effective. Employers may also require newer standards.

What does Z87 mean on safety glasses?

A Z87 marking indicates that the eyewear has been evaluated as occupational eye protection under the applicable standard.

NIOSH describes Z87 as the marking for normal or basic safety eyewear and Z87+ as the marking for high-impact protection. The frame and lens markings matter because the eyewear functions as a complete system, not merely as a loose lens inserted into any frame.

A Z87 marking should not be interpreted as:

  • Protection from every workplace hazard
  • Proof that the eyewear is suitable for welding
  • Proof of chemical-splash protection
  • Proof of laser protection
  • Proof of arc-flash protection
  • Permission to ignore the employer’s hazard assessment

It means the product meets the applicable requirements represented by its markings.

What does Z87+ mean?

The plus sign identifies high-impact protection.

NIOSH states that industrial eyewear marked Z87+ has high-impact protection, while basic Z87 eyewear is intended for normal safety use. High-impact eyewear must meet more demanding impact requirements than basic-impact eyewear.

High-impact safety glasses are commonly selected where hazards may include:

  • Flying wood chips
  • Metal fragments
  • Grinding debris
  • Concrete or masonry particles
  • Fast-moving dust and debris
  • Power-tool projectiles
  • Material ejected from machinery

The plus sign matters. A frame that merely says “Z87” should not automatically be marketed as equivalent to eyewear marked “Z87+.”

Are regular sunglasses impact resistant?

Some are. That still does not make them occupational safety glasses.

Many consumer sunglasses use polycarbonate or other durable lens materials. A wraparound frame may also provide more coverage than a small fashion frame.

But workplace protective performance depends on more than lens material.

It can include:

  • Whether the lens remains in the frame during impact
  • Frame strength
  • Minimum coverage
  • Side protection
  • Optical quality
  • Markings
  • Resistance to specific hazards
  • Performance of the complete assembled product

NIOSH explains that safety eyewear testing evaluates both lenses and frames because a lens can remain intact yet still pop out or deform during impact.

A seller should not call ordinary sunglasses “safety glasses” merely because the lenses are polycarbonate.

Does UV400 mean ANSI Z87?

No.

UV protection and occupational impact protection are separate claims.

UV400 generally refers to filtering ultraviolet radiation up to approximately 400 nanometers. That can be valuable for outdoor use, but it does not establish that the glasses meet workplace impact requirements.

Likewise:

  • Polarized does not mean Z87
  • Mirrored does not mean Z87
  • Wraparound does not mean Z87
  • Shatter-resistant does not necessarily mean Z87+
  • Dark tint does not prove UV protection
  • Z87 does not automatically describe every optical or radiation hazard

A quality pair of work sunglasses may offer both UV protection and an ANSI Z87+ rating, but each feature should be verified separately.

Does polarized mean safety rated?

No.

Polarization reduces glare from horizontal reflective surfaces such as:

  • Wet pavement
  • Water
  • Glass
  • Vehicle surfaces
  • Metal roofing
  • Snow
  • Bright concrete

That can improve visual comfort for drivers, equipment operators, outdoor crews, and workers exposed to strong reflected light.

But polarization is an optical feature, not an occupational impact rating.

A pair of sunglasses can be:

  • Polarized but not Z87 rated
  • Z87+ rated but not polarized
  • Polarized and Z87+ rated
  • Neither polarized nor Z87 rated

Check the safety markings and the manufacturer’s product documentation rather than assuming polarization means protection from flying debris.

Why side protection matters

Flying particles do not always approach from directly in front of the wearer.

OSHA requires side protection when there is a hazard from flying objects. Detachable side shields are acceptable when they meet the applicable protective requirements.

Side protection may come from:

  • Integrated wraparound lens design
  • Permanent side shields
  • Approved detachable side shields
  • Goggles with appropriate coverage

A fashionable curved frame may look protective but still leave gaps around the temple or cheek.

Coverage should be evaluated while the wearer is:

  • Looking up
  • Looking down
  • Turning the head
  • Bending over
  • Working underneath equipment
  • Wearing a hard hat
  • Wearing hearing protection
  • Wearing a respirator or mask

NIOSH advises selecting eyewear based on the work position and actual path of debris, noting that work underneath equipment may require better-fitting glasses or goggles.

Are safety sunglasses the same as safety glasses?

They can be.

“Safety sunglasses” usually refers to protective eyewear that combines:

  • Occupational eye-protection performance
  • Tinted lenses for bright conditions
  • UV protection
  • Sometimes polarization
  • Sometimes mirrored coatings

The important part is not the marketing category. It is the rating and intended use.

A tinted Z87+ product may be appropriate for outdoor impact hazards. A regular pair of polarized sunglasses may be appropriate for driving or recreation but not for grinding, cutting, drilling, or other tasks with flying debris.

Tint does not create impact protection.

Can I wear regular sunglasses on a construction site?

Only when they are appropriate for the hazards and meet the employer’s requirements.

OSHA’s construction standard requires suitable eye or face protection when workers are exposed to flying particles, molten metal, chemicals, harmful vapors, or injurious light radiation. It also requires side protection for flying-object hazards and properly marked protective equipment.

An ordinary pair of sunglasses may be acceptable for general sun comfort in an area with no identified eye hazard—but it should not be substituted for required safety eyewear.

On an active site, hazards may include:

  • Grinding
  • Cutting
  • Drilling
  • Sawing
  • Chipping
  • Concrete dust
  • Nail guns
  • Compressed air
  • Falling debris
  • Chemical handling
  • Welding or torch work

The employer’s hazard assessment determines the required protection.

Are Z87+ sunglasses enough for every job?

No.

Safety spectacles are only one category of eye protection.

Different hazards may require different equipment.

Flying particles

Z87+ spectacles with suitable side protection may be appropriate, depending on the task and hazard.

Chemical splash

Indirectly vented or non-vented goggles may be required. Ordinary safety glasses do not form a seal around the eyes.

Severe splash or face exposure

Goggles may need to be combined with a face shield.

Grinding

High-impact spectacles or goggles may be required, often with additional face protection depending on the task.

Welding and cutting

Appropriate filter lenses and shade numbers are required. Ordinary tinted safety sunglasses are not welding protection. OSHA specifies minimum protective shade guidance for various welding and cutting operations.

Lasers

Laser-specific protection is selected for the wavelength and power involved. Standard Z87 eyewear alone does not establish laser protection.

Electric arc or arc flash

Specialized protection may be required. NIOSH notes that Z87 selection guidance does not itself cover electric arcs.

Dust

Safety glasses may not adequately control fine dust entering around the lenses. Goggles may be more appropriate.

No single pair is correct for every hazard.

Where should I look for the marking?

Markings may appear on:

  • The lens
  • The temple or arm
  • The frame
  • Prescription lens components
  • Removable side shields
  • Other parts of the protector

NIOSH notes that both lenses and frames are required to carry appropriate markings and that older versions of the standard may use different marking conventions.

When inspecting a pair, verify:

  • Manufacturer identification
  • Z87 or Z87+ marking
  • Any additional hazard markings
  • Whether both frame and lens are properly marked
  • Whether the product documentation matches the actual eyewear

Do not rely only on a retailer title that says “safety.”

What do other Z87 markings mean?

Depending on the product and applicable edition, additional markings may describe protection or lens properties.

NIOSH identifies examples such as:

  • D markings related to dust protection
  • U markings related to ultraviolet filtration
  • R markings related to infrared filtration
  • Z87-2 markings for prescription safety eyewear
  • Z87-2+ for high-impact prescription configurations

Exact markings and requirements can vary by product type and standard edition, so the manufacturer’s documentation and applicable standard should be consulted.

Avoid oversimplifying a product based on one symbol.

What about prescription glasses?

Ordinary prescription glasses are not automatically safety glasses.

OSHA requires workers who need corrective lenses to use protection that either:

  • Incorporates the prescription into the safety eyewear, or
  • Fits over the prescription glasses without disturbing either pair’s proper position

That requirement appears in both general-industry and construction eye-protection standards.

Options may include:

  • Prescription Z87 safety glasses
  • Prescription Z87+ safety glasses
  • Over-the-glasses safety eyewear
  • Goggles designed to fit over prescription eyewear

Do not assume ordinary everyday eyeglasses provide workplace impact protection.

How should safety glasses fit?

Protective eyewear should remain stable, provide appropriate coverage, and not interfere with other required PPE.

OSHA’s construction rule states that protectors should fit snugly, remain reasonably comfortable under the intended conditions, and avoid unduly restricting movement.

A good fit generally means:

  • The frame does not slide down the nose
  • The temples do not create painful pressure
  • The lens provides coverage around the eye area
  • Side gaps are limited for the intended hazard
  • The eyewear stays in position during head movement
  • The frame works with the worker’s hard hat and hearing protection
  • The lenses do not sit against eyelashes
  • The view is not distorted
  • The glasses are comfortable enough to remain worn

The most protective glasses provide little value when workers constantly remove them because they are uncomfortable, fogged, or poorly fitted.

Can tinted safety glasses be used indoors?

Sometimes, but the tint must match the environment and task.

A dark outdoor lens can reduce visibility indoors, in shaded areas, or when workers move between bright and dim environments.

Potential consequences include:

  • Missing floor hazards
  • Reduced detail
  • Poor depth perception
  • Difficulty reading labels
  • Delayed visual adjustment
  • Workers lifting the glasses to see

Clear or lighter lenses may be more appropriate indoors. Gray, mirrored, or polarized lenses may be more useful outdoors in bright conditions.

The eye protection still needs to meet the required safety rating regardless of tint.

When should safety glasses be replaced?

Replace or remove them from service when protection, fit, or vision is compromised.

Warning signs include:

  • Cracked lenses
  • Deep scratches
  • Chipped lens edges
  • Loose lenses
  • Distorted vision
  • Bent frames
  • Loose temples
  • Broken side shields
  • Damaged nose pieces
  • Missing or unreadable markings
  • Damage following a significant impact
  • Coatings that have failed badly
  • A fit that no longer provides proper coverage

Scratches are not merely cosmetic when they interfere with vision. Workers may remove badly scratched glasses, increasing exposure.

Follow the manufacturer’s care and replacement guidance and the employer’s PPE procedure.

Common myths about safety sunglasses

“They are polycarbonate, so they are safety glasses.”

Not necessarily. Lens material alone does not establish compliance of the complete eyewear assembly.

“Polarized means protective.”

False. Polarization reduces glare. It does not establish impact performance.

“Wraparound sunglasses are automatically Z87.”

False. Shape and appearance do not prove testing or certification.

“Z87 and Z87+ mean the same thing.”

False. The plus sign identifies high-impact performance.

“Dark safety glasses can be used for welding.”

False. Welding requires properly rated filter protection with the correct shade for the process.

“A face shield replaces safety glasses.”

Often false. Depending on the hazard, a face shield may be secondary protection worn over safety glasses or goggles rather than a replacement.

“All tinted safety glasses block UV.”

Do not assume it. Verify the manufacturer’s UV claim and relevant markings.

How to choose work sunglasses

Before buying, ask:

What is the hazard?

Flying particles, glare, dust, chemicals, welding radiation, and liquid splash require different solutions.

Is high-impact protection required?

Look for Z87+ when the hazard assessment calls for high-impact eyewear.

Is side protection adequate?

Check wraparound coverage or approved side shields.

Will the glasses be used indoors or outdoors?

Choose a lens tint that maintains safe visibility.

Is polarization useful?

It may help around pavement, vehicles, water, glass, metal, or other reflective surfaces.

Does the eyewear fit the worker?

Frame size, nose shape, temple length, and head width matter.

Will it work with other PPE?

Test compatibility with hard hats, hearing protection, respirators, and face coverings.

Are the markings visible and documented?

Verify the actual product—not merely the marketing title.

The bottom line

Regular sunglasses are designed primarily for sun comfort and UV protection.

ANSI Z87-rated eyewear is designed and tested as occupational eye protection.

A pair of sunglasses may look durable, use polycarbonate lenses, block UV, and reduce glare while still lacking a workplace safety rating.

  • Z87 identifies occupational protective eyewear.
  • Z87+ identifies high-impact protection.
